Umatilla is located along the Columbia River and freeway I-82 and Oregon Highway 395. Umatilla has numerous parks and great access to the Columbia River. Umatilla citizens have great fishing opportunities and you can easily launch your boat in and out of the river. There is also a state park near Umatilla. The site of Umatilla was first visited by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1806. Lewis and Clarks mission was to survey the Pacific Northwest for the U.S. Government. Umatilla was again visited in 1812 by Wilson Price Hunt who was exploring the fur trading possibilities for John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company. In 1861 an area east of the mouth of the Umatilla River was surveyed by Timothy W. Davenport and became the general land office map as the Umatilla Landing. In 1862 Jesse Lurchin applied for preemption of 120 acres above the mouth of the Umatilla River to create a town site. In 1863 the first Post Office was created and Z. F. Moody was assigned as the first Postmaster. In 1864 Umatilla became the county seat for Umatilla County. Umatilla only had the county seat for 4 years before it was moved to Pendleton. Umatilla became incorporated in 1906. The area saw numerous steamships up and down the river of which the Ann and the Lewistion steamships were built in Umatilla. Construction of McNary Dam began in 1947 and was dedicated in 1954 by President Eisenhower.
