The former gold mining town of Sumpter is nestled in the Elkhorn Mountains and is a popular place to enjoy winter recreational activities. Richland has a small community with a rural setting, RV park and great access to the Snake River. Halfway in the hay day had a large mill and the downtown if vibrate. Halfway is a short drive to the Snake River. Durkee is a former mining and railroad town. You can also find La Grande Real Estate in Union County. La Grande, the largest community in Union County is about a 45 minute drive from Baker City. Other communities in Union County are Island City, North Powder, Union, Cove, Imbler, Summerville and Elgin. If your making the drive to find Pendleton Real Estate, it’s about a 90 minute drive. In Grant County, the communities are John Day,Prairie City, Canyon City, Mt Vernon, Monument, Dayville and Long Creek.

The local economy in Baker County has strong agriculture, cattle, logging, and tourism sector. Ranchers from all over in Oregon meet in Baker City to create the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. Agriculture makes up a good part of the local economy. Farmers grow and bale alfalfa for the cattle. Some of the hay is exported out of the county. Baker City Real Estate – Recreation Opportunities in Baker County:
In a short drive, you can be enjoying the mountains for hiking, skiing, snowmobiling or picking huckleberries in the summer. Phillips Lake, a 30 minute drive from Baker City and is home to the state park which offers great camping opportunities. The lake offers boating facilities for those wanting to fishing to just go boating. A drive to the Hells Canyon and Snake River is about an hour’s drive.
Residents who own Baker City Real Estate and enjoy the drive along the HWY 86 drive are the communities of Richland and Halfway. Richland has quick access to fishing on the arm of the Snake River and to some of the best Chukar hunting in Eastern Oregon.
Anthony Lakes Ski is about a 40 minute drive from Baker City and about an hour drive from La Grande. Anthony Lake has one ski lift and numerous ski runs, cross country ski area and snowmobiling access. The lodge offer two restaurants and ski rentals.
Baker County Schools:
Baker County offers public and private schools. Most of the private schools are in Baker City. The school year begins around Labor day weekend and continues to mid June. Summertime is given to Little League Baseball and the John Day Swim Team.

Mt Vernon is the next community East of John Day located along HWY 26 and HWY 395. Dayville is located along the John Day River on the West side of the John Day Valley. Long Creek is located on the high plateau along HWY 395.
