Union County is nestled between the Blue Mountains and the Wallowa Mountains, offering stunning views and limitless outdoor recreation opportunities — all within a relatively short distance of any community in Union County. To the south, the beautiful Elkhorn range of the Blues offers easy access to Anthony Lakes and great hiking trails. We do have some great recreational properties for sale in Union County.
Enjoy backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains. The Eagle Cap Wilderness Area takes up a large part of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and is accessible above Cove and from neighboring Wallowa County. It’s the largest wilderness area in the state.
If improved or semi-improved campgrounds are your choice, you’ll find several state parks and national forest campgrounds throughout the region. Near La Grande is the publicly owned Mount Emily Recreation Center, which offers 3,700 acres of forest land that has areas designated for ATV/off-road use, horseback riding, mountain biking or just hiking around.
Northeast Oregon is a recreational wonderland, no matter what season it is. Whether it’s skiing or snowmobiling in the winter or fishing and hiking in the spring, summer and fall, recreational opportunities abound.
IN SUMMER, enjoy hiking, biking, boating, camping, golf, swimming and fishing in Eastern Oregon. The possibilities are endless, whether venturing into the Blue or Wallowa Mountains or staying close to town to enjoy a round of golf or a dip in La Grande’s Veterans Memorial Pool or Cove’s warm springs pool. The region is perfect for a bike ride — on the road or on trails. Many locals enjoy a bike ride through the Grande Ronde Valley. If you’re a motor cycle rider, the back country offers some great riding opportunities. From La Grande, you can make the turn to Wallowa County, traveling over Cricket Flat, down through the Minam Grade to where the Minam and Wallowa Rivers meet. Not to far down river is the State Camp Ground. The park offers several camping spots and it’s a great area to begin your Steelhead fishing. Many fisherman cross the river and walk down stream for some of their favorite fishing holes. Mount Emily Recreation Area offers 3,700 acres of opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, off-road driving and horseback riding just minutes from La Grande.
WINTER doesn’t skip a beat, either. Northeast Oregon is a mecca for snowmobile riding. If skiing or snowboarding are your passions, the region offers Anthony Lakes Ski Area in the Elkhorns and Spout Springs in the Blues. Cross country skiers can choose to make their own trails in the mountains or enjoy the groomed trails at Blue Mountain Crossing west of La Grande or the Nordic areas at Anthony Lakes or Spout Springs.
FALL is a beautiful time of year in Northeast Oregon, and pleasant weather usually extends well into October so most summertime activities can still be pursued. Deer and elk seasons arrive and hunters take to the hills.
SPRING ushers in a new recreation season every year, and and those that enjoy the outdoors begin venturing into the mountains againto begin taking up their favorites activities. Spring is also the time of year special events like the Ladd Marsh Birdathon take place.
Whatever recreation is your passion, you’ll find ample opportunities in Northeast Oregon.
