The first Post Office was built in 1864 in Union at a time when La Grande and Union were similar in size. When the railroad was established, La Grande´s population began to out to pace the City of Union. Union also was home to the Union County seat until an election occurred and the public voted to move the County seat to La Grande. It is said that the City of La Grande offered a building for $1.00 dollar.
Today you can find some of the Victorian Style of homes that were built in the late 1800´s to the early 1900´s. Union also has had the Downtown main street reconstructed with newer sidewalks. Main Street Union was recently designated a National Historic District, honoring the city´s history and brick architecture. The downtown is very friendly and offers a large variety of shopping. Union also is home the County Museum. The museum continues to grow with donations and public support. The Buffalo Peak Golf Course is the only public golf course in Union County and offers a lynx style course. This is a par 72 and has exciting challenges for the players. If you are on hole #3, you will find excellent views of the Grande Ronde Valley. The Eastern Oregon Livestock show also is located in Union and has a long history of providing livestock judging contest for 4-H & FAA participants from the Pacific Northwest and their horse racing. They also have one of the more participating parades in Union County.
