North Powder is located on the Southern portion of Union County next to the Powder River.  A historical marker is located in the community that marks the spot where, in the winterof 1811-12, Marie Dorian gave birth to the first child with white blood born west of the Rockies.  Dorian, an Iowa Indian and the wife of a French trapper, was accompanying the Wilson-Price Hunt Expedition.  A stage station was established at the site of North Powder in 1862 as a result of migration to the Powder River mines.  The post office was established in 1862.

For more than 40 years, North Powder, there was an ice plant in North Powder which harvested from 8,000 to 15,000 tons of ice from an artificial lake each winter.  The plant and the buildings burnt down in 1937.  The Ice Plant served the needs of the Pacific Fruit and Express Company, providing ice for the rail cars that shopped their products to markets.  The town also was home to two sawmills that were closed during the 1990´s.  The area also has plenty of recreation for the public by having the Wolf Creek Reservoir and Thief Valley Reservoir close by.

North Powder is 24 miles from La Grande and
is about a 35 minute drive to La Grande.
