Baker City is the county seat for Baker County and is home to the Baker City Bulldogs. Baker City has a vibrant downtown with good shopping opportunities. The downtown is bustling with art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants with outdoor seating area during the nice weather months. With it’s older historic buildings the street is wider than most communities in Eastern Oregon. It is said that the street needed to be wide enough for horse drawn wagons to be able to turn around on Main Street.
Mining was the major source of income in Baker City’s early days. The Sumper Valley and Granite communities were bustling with minors. Baker City was the main community for the minors to spend some of their hard earn monies. The cattle ranches have been the main stay for the economy for Baker County. The Oregon Cattleman’s Association was created in Baker City and has been very active in the state since that time.
The community has surrounded by majestic mountains, the Elkhorns and Eagle Cap. The Elks are viewed from the West and is home to Anthony Lakes Ski Resort. The area is a huge draw for skiers in Northeast Oregon. Skiers also come from the Boise area as well as Southwest Washington. There are many cabins that are located in the Anthony Lakes area. It’s a great opportunity to own a cabin for wintertime fun and summertime fun.
The Eagle Cap mountains offer some of great hiking opportunities. A popular trail is the Eagle Creek trail. There’s a nice meadow to walk through before the climb begins. It’s very pristine and offers solitude. There are also some great camping opportunities along the Eagle Creek.
Baker City offers great access right off I-84 freeway. It’s about a 1 and 1/2 drive to the Boise airport which is the choice of airport connections for Northeast Oregon residents.
